Mezzotint is a printmaking process in which the plate is roughened by using a tool called a rocker, curved toothed metal blade that is "rocked" unidirectionally until the plate surface results in a velvety black ground. The artist then proceeds to scrape and burnish away the burrs in the plate which reveals the image. These prints are on hand rocked copper plates done in this method.
